Māori@Marshland

By Bex Osbourn We have been looking at the significance of the Koru and then relating it to our own whanau.  The students had to complete a Pastel art with dye pieces that showed their understanding of the Koru in Maori culture and then design a Koru air dry clay piece that represents themselves and their whanau.

Every two weeks, the senior students in the school have an opportunity to earn house points by completing a M ā ori quiz. The quiz questions the students on their te reo knowledge. Students are allowed to use the web to solve the questions. This is often used in class for a fast finisher or added as an added extra for homework.

In the mornings, we start the day with a Karakia, kupu (word) and whakatauki (proverb). This karakia is a great way for the students to focus on setting themselves up for the day with the right mind-set for learning. The kupu is changed every week and is based around a sentence. This term is based on asking what the weather is like. The proverb changes twice a term and is based on learning aspects.

Tau ke! It's great to hear and see all the you tamariki singing at the top of your lungs. The winners of the Hub competition, and being rewarded with 15min of free time, at the discretion of your Hub teachers, are... TUI! By Kellie Sim and Wiki Brown Over Term 3, Pukeko and Kiwi have been meeting once a week to participate in some junior kapa haka. The tamariki have been having a fabulous time learning actions to some well known Māori songs. Here is a short video of them singing and doing actions to the Matariki Song.
